South of the Leinster nickel mining complex in the Northeastern Goldfields of Western Australia, Breakaway holds a commanding tenement position incorporating several contiguous projects (Wildara, Mt Clifford and Yillaree Projects) termed the Wildara Project Group. The tenements cover a multiple series of nickel bearing ultramafic belts that in total extend a strike distance of
some 60 kilometres.
The Wildara Project Group is situated within the heart of one of
the world's most prolific nickel sulphide provinces on the major Perseverance shear zone, which hosts the major nickel deposits
of Perseverance, Rocky's Reward, Mount Keith, Yakabindie
(BHP Billiton), and Honeymoon Well (Norilsk) as well as the large Cosmos (Xstrata) camp and the nearby discoveries of Waterloo (Norilsk) and Sinclair (Xstrata) which have progressed to production. Strategically located towards the northern end of the Kambalda-Mt Keith nickel corridor, the Project Group is close to a bitumen highway, power and nickel processing plants.
Breakaway successfully delineated the structurally - controlled Horn Nickel Sulphide Deposit (JORC Code compliant Inferred Resource of 600,000 tonnes at 1.39% Ni and 0.30% Cu for 8,300 tonnes of contained nickel and 1,800 tonnes of contained copper) within the central portion of the Project Group in April 2008. This discovery is considered to be an important achievement which clearly demonstrates the excellent nickel potential of the Project and its ultramafic host rocks.
Outside of the Horn Deposit, the Project Group also encompasses a large number of historic nickel exploration targets which have been the subject of systematic exploration during the period 2008 – 2011.
Breakaway undertook a 3,400m program of RC and diamond drilling at the Wildara and Miranda Nickel Projects during early 2011. While the drilling confirmed the presence of the prospective ultramafic host horizon for nickel sulphide mineralisation at several key target areas, the drilling failed to generate any economic intersections.
Given the fact that nickel sulphide exploration generally requires a fairly lengthy time horizon and a sustained funding commitment, the future of Wildara Project Group is under review.
